Here is what this site refuses: it refuses to call a newsroom dishonest when the record only shows that an editor was in a hurry, and it refuses to fill a gap in a source with a number that nobody published. When a front page is wrong, the interesting question is not who lied. It is which desk made the call, at what hour, and with what on the wire at that moment. Where that cannot be established from published work, this site says it cannot be established, and leaves the line unfinished rather than finishing it well.

Presswork is an independent editorial site. It covers press accountability in the United States. The coverage runs across four sections: Baltimore and Maryland, National Politics and the Press, Disasters and Hazards, and Cable, Broadcast and Finance.
What the site covers
Baltimore and Maryland coverage looks at how local newspapers, television stations and radio outlets report on city and state government, courts, policing and public records. National Politics and the Press follows how national outlets frame campaigns, legislation and the White House, and how they correct or fail to correct the record. Disasters and Hazards examines reporting on storms, floods, fires and industrial accidents, including how early warnings and official statements are handled. Cable, Broadcast and Finance looks at cable news, network broadcasts and financial media, and how they treat earnings, markets and corporate accountability.
How the articles are written
Articles are written from public sources named in each text. These sources include published articles, broadcast transcripts, court filings, government reports and public records. The writing is in the third person about every organisation. No newsroom, outlet or former operator is represented. Each article states its limits: what the public record shows and what it does not show. No private data is used. No cookies or tracking are used on the site.
